Three bubbly, childhood friends Riko, Ayumi and Jun have formed an amateur detective agency (“Circle”) called the “Yuyake Tantei Dan” (Sunset Detective Agency ). Together they investigate the various unusual events that seem to surround their sleepy hometown of Soregamachi. Yet things always seem to invariably get out of control and they find themselves in and above their heads in trouble. When that happens, they are assisted by the mysterious magical super heroine “Otasuke Girl” who seems to appear out of nowhere to help them. Unbeknownst to Ayumi and Jun, Otasuke Girl is actually their cheery friend Riko.

Who is Otasuke Girl?
“Otasuke Girl” is the alter ego of Sakaguchi Riko, a student at the all-girl’s school “Alps Jyou Gakuen” (Alps Girls’ School). She is part of the “Yuyake Tantei Dan” (Sunset Detective Agency) an amateur detective agency that investigates unusual or alleged supernatural occurrences around their hometown.

Riko is your typical Japanese teenage girl, who love all thing cute and is carefree to a fault. She has a good heart and is always protective of her friends. She can be a bit naïve at times but has
a such a strong sense of optimism that it is hard not to like being around her.

It is not known how Riko came about gaining her powers but what is known is that her powers are magic-based and stem from the “Otasuke Stick” that she carries.

The “Otasuke Stick” is a magical baton that enables Riko to transform into Otasuke Girl. In order to transform into her alter ego, Riko must chant the following verse: “Otasuke – Imakousou Otome No Jyunshin” (Rescue – Now Is The Time For A Maiden’s Pure Heart).

Once the verse is uttered, a magical swing (bronco) appears which she rides into battle as her red and white costume magically materializes on her body. Her battle cry is the following: “Kita Zou, Kita Zou, Akuma No Zanmai…Otasuke Girl– Kenzan!” (Here I Come, Here I Come, Evil Twilight <Samdhi> - Otasuke Girl – Here I Am).

The “Otasuke Stick” is not only the source of her magical powers but is her primary defensive weapon. It has a number of special attributes:

- It can grow and elongate to twice or even triple its size. In this form Otasuke Girl can use it as a battle staff weapon or a   javelin.

- Her “Gift Wire” (which is shot out from the Otasuke Stick’s base) is a ribbon-like rope which can ensnare opponents.

In addition to her Otasuke Stick, Otasuke Girl has small glass “marble-like” throwing objects called “Ohajiki Bread” (Flat Marble Game Pieces) that she can throw at opponents to blind them.

Otasuke Girl has a number of super powers chief among them being her increased agility. Her main attacks are the “Hip Punch”, where she “bumps” her opponents with her hips and her “Otasuke Kick” which she can kick an opponent with incredible force.

She doesn’t seem to be particularly adapt in hand-to-hand combat, although she can handle herself in a fight and her strength level is also normal for a girl her size (except for her kicks).

Who are the Yuyake Tanteidan?

The “Yuyake Tantei Dan” (Sunset Detective Agency ) is very similar to “Mystery, Inc.” in Hanna Barbera’s “Scooby Doo” or “The Teen Angels” in “Captain Caveman” in that they are amateur sleuths who go around solving mysteries which involve either supernatural circumstances or outlandish criminals. They were formed by three childhood friends who all go to the same high school (Alps Jyou Gakuen <Alps Girls School>) in the town of Soregamachi. They don’t have any official headquarters but regularly meet at the local snack shop “Usagiko” (Little Rabbit) which is run by friendly shop owner Sachiho. They mostly look through the tabloids and newspapers for their cases but sometimes get involved in mysteries through their police contact Detective Sengoku, much to his chagrin.

Aside from Riko/Otasuke Girl, the other members include:

Moroi Ayumi
Riko’s tomboyish girlfriend. Athletic and tall, she is the more opinionated member of the group and usually is the one with the quickest temper. She is always jumping into action without thinking and likes confrontation. Strong-willed and tough when it comes to solving crime but vulnerable when it comes to matters of the heart. She is always on the hunt for the perfect boyfriend.

Kawai Jun
Kind hearted but extremely naïve and trusting, she seems to always get herself into trouble. Tends to be a bit clumsy. Is the team’s “spirited” mischief maker and comedienne.

“Otasuke Girl” was Tsuburaya’s only foray into the realm of super heroine shows and was their answer to Toei’s “Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon” (Toei, 2003), “Bishoujou Kamen Poitrine” (Toei, 1990) and “Yuugen Jikkou Shimai Shushutorian” (Toei, 1992).

Was mainly a comedy-idol show as opposed to a straight action oriented show.

Opening credits feature an animated version of the character (done in SD form).
